Canada Launches $100 Million Scholarship Fund for Indian Students Under New Talent Strategy

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): In a major boost to international academic mobility, the Canadian government has unveiled a landmark scholarship initiative worth up to $100 million (approx. ₹830 crore) specifically for Indian students. Announced during high-level bilateral talks last week, the fund is the cornerstone of the new Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy. This framework aims to deepen the long-standing educational ties between the two nations by focusing on advanced research, technology, and cross-border academic collaboration.

At the heart of this investment is a fully funded scholarship programme designed to support up to 200 high-achieving Indian students. These scholars will have their tuition fees and academic expenses covered at recognised Canadian institutions, with the University of Toronto designated to lead the administration of the fund. While specific application timelines and eligibility requirements are still being finalised, the move signals Ottawa’s commitment to remaining a top-tier destination for India’s brightest minds, particularly in fields such as artificial intelligence and creative industries.

Beyond direct financial aid, the strategy introduces 13 new institutional partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities to facilitate joint research and streamlined exchange pathways. A particularly innovative feature of the plan is the creation of three “hybrid study locations” within India. These centres will allow students to commence their Canadian degree programmes locally before transitioning to Canada to complete their studies. By integrating faculty mobility and collaborative research, the initiative aims to build a sustainable pipeline of talent that serves the economic and technological ambitions of both countries.
