Canada Flags Over 150,000 Student Permit Violations, Raising Fraud Concerns

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Canada is facing growing concern over the integrity of its international student system after a federal audit revealed that more than 150,000 study permit holders were flagged for potential violations between 2023 and 2024. The report by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) highlights serious gaps in monitoring and enforcement, including cases linked to suspected fraud, fake admission letters, and students failing to comply with study permit conditions. Despite the scale of the issue, officials reportedly have the capacity to investigate only a small fraction of these cases each year, leaving tens of thousands unchecked. The audit also found that hundreds of confirmed fraud cases were not acted upon, raising questions about accountability and oversight within the system.

The findings come amid a sharp rise in international student numbers, with Canada hosting hundreds of thousands of students across provinces, putting pressure on housing, institutions, and immigration controls. While the government has introduced stricter verification measures such as directly confirming acceptance letters with colleges and universities experts say enforcement remains weak. Many students caught in the system are believed to be victims of unauthorized agents and fraudulent networks, particularly from overseas, who exploit gaps in the process. The situation is now fueling national debate over immigration policy, system transparency, and the need to protect genuine students while cracking down on organized fraud.
