Canada Federal Elections 2025: Gujaratis Step Into Canadian Politics

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): While Canada prepares for its 45th federal election on April 28, 2025, the Indian diaspora has started to play an influential role in the nation’s politics. This year marks a significant shift in development, as candidates of Gujarati origin are making their electoral debut, while Punjabi politicians look to secure another term in office.

The Indian-origin communities in Canada represent a vibrant tapestry of cultures, including Punjabis, Gujaratis, Malayalis, and Bengalis. While many Indian immigrants have established themselves in Canada through skilled professions or academic pursuits, Punjabis and Gujaratis are particularly prominent in entrepreneurial and business circles.

New Faces, New Momentum

Historically, the Punjabi community has led the charge in Canadian politics, boasting a strong track record of elected representatives and even federal ministers. Gujaratis—despite their strong presence in business and community service—have remained largely outside the political limelight. That is, until now.

This year, four Gujarati-origin candidates are contesting in key electoral districts with large Indian-Canadian populations. Brampton, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta, have emerged as key battlegrounds as first-generation Gujaratis Jayesh Brahmbhatt, Sunjiv Raval, Ashok Patel, and Minesh Patel vie for seats in Parliament.

Punjabi Dominance Remains Strong

Despite this new development, the Punjabi community remains a dominant force, backed by decades of political involvement and deep-rooted community networks. Their presence in Canadian politics has been instrumental in shaping national policy on multiculturalism, immigration, and trade.

As the election date draws near, all eyes will be on whether the emerging Gujarati bloc can translate community support into electoral victories and how this evolving dynamic will influence the broader political narrative in Canada.
