Breaking the Constitution Is in Congress’s DNA: Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini

Chandigarh, June 25 – Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, claiming that undermining the Constitution is embedded in its DNA. Speaking at an event in Karnal marking 50 years since the imposition of Emergency in India, CM Saini said the Congress, despite claiming to protect the Constitution, continues to threaten its integrity by suggesting the revival of Article 370.

He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has followed the Constitution faithfully for the past 11 years, and the citizens have truly experienced a free and empowered India.

Highlighting the horrors of the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, Saini described it as the darkest chapter in Indian democracy. He said the then government used the Emergency to impose political will on the public, silencing voices and jailing writers and leaders who dared to speak out. “The Constitution and democracy were not even remembered during those times,” he added.

CM Saini reminded the audience that while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel successfully integrated 561 princely states into India, the one state assigned to Jawaharlal Nehru—Jammu and Kashmir—became a long-standing issue. He praised Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s ultimate sacrifice to abolish the permit system in J&K and lauded PM Modi’s fulfillment of Mookerjee’s dream of “One Nation, One Constitution, One Flag” by abrogating Article 370.

Saini criticized Congress for never respecting the Constitution and said even their leaders have insulted the democratic process by tearing bills in Parliament. “The same people who now raise slogans to save the Constitution never respected it in the first place,” he said, asserting that people have rejected Congress for these very reasons.

He contrasted the 55 years of Congress rule with PM Modi’s 11 years of governance, calling it a clear transformation in India’s development path. Saini said that Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047 aligns with the dreams of India’s freedom fighters, and every citizen must contribute to achieving this goal.

“Democracy is not just about winning elections and forming governments. It is a way of life,” he said, calling upon elders to educate younger generations about the Emergency and the importance of preserving freedom and constitutional values. He added that post-2014, India has begun celebrating the birth anniversaries of national icons to educate youth about their sacrifices.

He concluded by stating that today’s commemorative event is not just about remembering the past but preparing for a democratic and vibrant future. He also visited an exhibition set up by the Department of Information, Public Relations, Language & Culture and planted a sapling at the Kalpana Chawla Medical College premises.

Among those present were MLAs Yogendra Rana and Bhagwan Das Kabirpanthi, Karnal Mayor Renu Bala Gupta, and other dignitaries.
