BREAKING NEWS: Congress Names Olympian Pargat Singh as Punjab Chief in Pre-2027 Overhaul

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh)— The Congress high command has appointed former Indian national hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantt legislator Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) with immediate effect, rolling out a decisive leadership transition ahead of the 2027 state assembly polls.

The official notification follows the departure of outgoing state party chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the sitting Member of Parliament for Ludhiana, who stepped down after stewarding the provincial unit since April 2022. Warring’s exit came amid weeks of internal deliberations and broader organizational realignments by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) aimed at steadying the state apparatus.

A decorated Olympian, Arjuna awardee, and Padma Shri recipient, Singh brings substantial administrative seasoning and legislative tenure to the presidency. He has retained the Jalandhar Cantt assembly seat continuously since 2012 and previously held high-profile cabinet portfolios, including School Education and Sports.

The decision to entrust Singh with the state unit reflects a deliberate push to consolidate party factions, bridge regional dynamics across the pivotal Doaba belt, and establish an organized ground campaign to challenge the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The party is expected to reconstitute its state executive body and unveil fresh district-level leadership assignments in the coming weeks under Singh’s guidance.
