New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Indian security agencies have tightened surveillance along the eastern border in response to renewed disturbances in Bangladesh, officials said, stressing that the move is preventive in nature. While there has been no major disruption reported along the frontier, forces have been asked to remain prepared for any unforeseen situation.
Sources indicated that border formations, particularly in West Bengal, have increased monitoring amid concerns that instability across the border could lead to attempts at illegal crossings or smuggling. The alertness follows reports of an incident earlier this week in Cooch Behar district, where a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was allegedly taken away by cattle smugglers during an operation near the international boundary.
Although the BSF has not formally confirmed the incident, local accounts suggest the jawan was intercepted while trying to stop smuggling activities. He was reportedly freed later the same day after intervention by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Officials underlined that the situation was resolved without escalation and remains stable.
Security officials said coordination between Indian and Bangladeshi border forces continues through established communication channels. “There is constant liaison with our counterparts, and the ground situation is peaceful,” an official said, adding that no special reinforcements have been deployed beyond routine strengthening of patrols.
The heightened vigilance comes at a time when Bangladesh has been witnessing fresh protests and sporadic violence. Following the political upheaval in August 2024 that led to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, recent demonstrations with anti-India undertones have surfaced in several areas. These tensions have reportedly resulted in violent incidents, including the killing of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das.
Unrest linked to the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi has also led to arson and clashes in parts of the country. In one such episode on December 18, stones were allegedly thrown at the residence of the Assistant Indian High Commissioner in Chattogram.
Indian authorities said they are closely tracking developments across the border while ensuring that security arrangements on their side remain robust and responsive.
