Mumbai, April 5, 2025 — In a controversial move, ticketing giant BookMyShow has reportedly removed stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra from its listings following pressure from the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Shiv Sena functionary Rahool Kanal confirmed the action and publicly thanked BookMyShow CEO Ashish Hemrajani for what he described as “keeping the portal clean.”
While BookMyShow has not officially commented, Kanal released a letter praising the platform for removing Kamra not only from ticket sales and promotions but also from the site’s search history. “Thank you for respecting our emotions and maintaining peace,” Kanal wrote.
He also added, “Mumbaikars love all forms of art, but not personal agendas,” suggesting Kamra’s recent performance had crossed a line with its political undertones. The stand-up comedian had allegedly made a jibe referring to CM Shinde as a “traitor,” prompting a backlash.
Kanal, along with other Shiv Sena members, was booked for vandalising the venue where Kamra had performed. Despite this, he framed the delisting as a win for “pure entertainment.”
Meanwhile, Kamra has yet to respond to three police notices issued by Mumbai Police. He is believed to be in Puducherry. The comedian has maintained silence on the matter so far.
The incident has sparked a debate around artistic freedom and political interference in entertainment. Critics say this sets a dangerous precedent where dissenting voices are silenced through corporate and political pressure.
