Bikram Singh Majithia Bail Hearing Adjourned; Next Session on August 11

Chandigarh, August 8, 2025 — The bail proceedings of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia will resume on Monday, August 11, after Friday’s hearing concluded without a verdict. The session lasted over two-and-a-half hours, with both prosecution and defence presenting detailed arguments before the court decided to adjourn.

Majithia’s case stems from his June 25, 2025 arrest by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau following coordinated raids at nearly 25 locations, including his Amritsar residence. He is accused of amassing assets disproportionate to his declared income and allegedly having links to a ₹540 crore drug-money laundering network.

Initially placed under police remand, Majithia was later moved to judicial custody in New Nabha Jail for an initial 14-day term, which has been extended multiple times. His legal team has been actively challenging the arrest and remand process, questioning the evidentiary basis of the charges. In a parallel matter, the Punjab & Haryana High Court granted Majithia until August 26 to amend his plea contesting aspects of the case.

The scope of the legal battle has widened with the registration of an additional FIR, accusing Majithia of obstructing vigilance officials during one of the raids. Adding to the controversy, former Enforcement Directorate official Niranjan Singh has stated that convicted individuals in a ₹6,000 crore drug-money laundering case had earlier named Majithia, but that political pressure stalled investigations at the time.

The SAD has consistently rejected the allegations, branding them as politically motivated “witch hunting.” Party leaders maintain that the properties and assets in question have long belonged to the Majithia family and accuse the Vigilance Bureau of procedural violations.

Majithia has also petitioned for live-streaming of his court proceedings to ensure transparency and has sought a separate jail barrack citing security risks.

Friday’s hearing featured an exhaustive exchange between both sides but ended without a decision. The matter will now be taken up in the afternoon session on August 11, when final submissions are expected before the court decides on Majithia’s bail plea.
