Patna, October 5, 2025: The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, on Sunday confirmed that Bihar Assembly elections will be conducted before November 22, when the current assembly’s term expires. The state has 243 constituencies, including two reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs) and 38 for Scheduled Castes (SCs).
Speaking at a press conference in Patna, Kumar highlighted that the Election Commission (EC) has trained booth-level officers for the first time to ensure seamless polling. He also noted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, launched on June 24, 2025, was completed on schedule.
“The voters of Bihar should celebrate this festival of democracy with the same enthusiasm as Chhath. I appeal to all citizens to ensure full participation at the polls,” Kumar said, congratulating citizens for the successful completion of the SIR process.
He also praised the work of 90,217 booth-level officers, describing their efforts in cleansing voter lists as exemplary. “Just as Vaishali demonstrated the path to democracy, your work in voter list preparation will inspire the nation,” he remarked.
Election Commission officials are conducting a two-day review visit to Bihar to assess poll preparedness.
The upcoming elections are expected to witness a direct contest between the ruling NDA, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the opposition Mahagathbandhan, headed by RJD. The NDA currently holds 131 seats, including BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4, and two Independents, while the Mahagathbandhan has 111 seats, comprising RJD 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2, and CPI 2.
Political activity has intensified statewide, with both alliances stepping up campaigns ahead of a high-stakes election that could reshape Bihar’s political landscape.
