Bhagwant Mann Slams Delhi, Centre for Politicizing Stubble Burning Issue

Chandigarh, October 27, 2025: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday lashed out at both the Delhi government and the Centre, accusing them of unfairly blaming Punjab’s farmers for the recurring air pollution crisis in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Calling the issue “politicized beyond reason,” Mann said that instead of indulging in blame games, all governments should work together on a scientific and long-term solution to tackle stubble management.

“Every year, when Delhi’s pollution spikes, fingers are pointed at Punjab. My question is — does smoke from Punjab alone reach Delhi, and not from Haryana or other states?” Mann questioned.

‘Don’t Defame the Annadata’

Reaffirming his solidarity with farmers, the Chief Minister said those who feed the nation must not be portrayed as polluters. “Our farmers are the annadata, the lifeline of every household. Don’t defame them for a crisis that needs collective responsibility and planning,” he said.

Questioning the Logic of Blame

Taking a dig at Delhi’s pollution narrative, Mann remarked, “If winds are calm, how can smoke from Punjab even travel to Delhi?”

Appeal to the Centre

Urging the central government to take the lead, Mann said the Centre should develop a comprehensive, technology-based plan for crop residue management rather than politicizing the issue.

Seeking Cooperation, Not Confrontation

The Chief Minister concluded by calling for cooperation over confrontation, asserting that “political blame games won’t clear the air — collective action will.”
