Kapurthala (Gurpreet Singh): A significant spike in the Beas River’s water level has prompted authorities in Kapurthala to issue an urgent flood alert, urging residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to move to safer locations as soon as possible.
According to District Magistrate Amit Kumar Panchal, the river’s flow has escalated to 2.35 lakh cusecs following sustained rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Himalayas. The situation has become increasingly critical with further heavy rainfall expected in the region, as per a red alert issued by the Meteorological Department for Kapurthala and surrounding subdivisions, including Sultanpur Lodhi and Bhulath.
“We are prioritizing the safety of our citizens and request immediate cooperation in relocating from vulnerable zones,” Mr. Panchal stated. He added that emergency teams from the Army and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have already been deployed and are actively engaged in evacuation and relief efforts.
Continuous rain since last night has only worsened conditions, prompting the administration to open 24/7 control rooms to assist the public and coordinate rescue operations. Officials are keeping close watch on the situation as water levels continue to rise.
Residents in affected areas have been advised not to delay evacuation and to avoid approaching the riverbanks.
