BC Premier David Eby’s Approval Rating Hits Lowest Point Since Taking Office

Vancouver (Rajeev Sharma): British Columbia Premier David Eby’s popularity has slipped to its lowest level since he became premier, according to a new Angus Reid Institute poll.

The survey shows Eby’s approval at 41 per cent, a five-point drop from June and 12 points lower than in March. Only nine per cent of respondents said they “strongly approve” of his performance, while 32 per cent “moderately approve.” On the other side, 18 per cent “moderately disapprove” and 32 per cent “strongly disapprove.”

Analysts suggest several factors are weighing on the NDP government, including the BC General Employees Union strike, a widening provincial deficit, and controversy surrounding court rulings on Indigenous land rights.

“British Columbians are struggling. They’re finding the times very challenging,” said Hamish Telford, political science professor at the University of the Fraser Valley. He noted that while housing demand has cooled somewhat, prices remain steep, leaving voters frustrated with Eby’s progress on a central promise.

Rising costs of living and concerns about public disorder are also seen as fueling discontent.

Nationally, the poll ranks Eby among the least popular premiers, tied with Ontario’s Doug Ford. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew topped the list at 61 per cent approval, while Quebec’s François Legault ranked lowest at 22 per cent.

The findings are based on an online survey of 4,045 Canadian adults conducted from August 28 to September 5. The data was weighted to reflect the national population by region, gender, age, income, and education. The margin of error for B.C. results is estimated at +/- four per cent.
