BC Premier David Eby Leads Trade Mission to India, Strengthening Economic Ties with Punjab and Other States

British Columbia (Rajeev Sharma): British Columbia (BC) Premier David Eby will head a high-level trade delegation to India from January 12 to 17, 2026, as part of the province’s “Look West: Jobs and Prosperity” strategy aimed at expanding trade beyond U.S. markets and creating good-paying jobs for British Columbians. Chandigarh has been identified as a key stop on the mission, highlighting BC’s focus on North India as a strategic partner.

Accompanying Premier Eby will be Ravi Kahlon, BC Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth. The delegation plans to engage with government officials, industry leaders, and business communities in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru (Bangalore), promoting investment and collaboration in sectors such as clean energy, sustainable forestry, critical minerals, and responsible mining.

“India represents a significant opportunity for BC,” Premier Eby said. “With U.S. tariffs impacting our businesses, diversifying our trade partnerships is more important than ever. This mission aims to strengthen relationships, attract investment, and support good jobs for British Columbians.”

Chandigarh, in particular, is being positioned as a gateway for trade and technology collaboration with Punjab and the surrounding region. The province aims to leverage India’s growing demand for clean technology and energy while showcasing BC’s expertise in sustainable industries.

Minister Kahlon noted, “British Columbia has the highest share of exports to India among all provinces. This mission will highlight our strengths in clean energy, sustainable forestry, responsible mining, and clean technology, creating new investment opportunities and economic growth for our province.”

The trade mission aligns with BC’s broader Look West plan, which seeks to double exports to non-U.S. markets over the next decade. Previous trade missions to Asia and Europe have emphasized BC’s capabilities in life sciences, technology, agriculture, forestry, ocean science, sustainability, and innovation.

Premier Eby emphasized the urgency of diversifying trade in the face of international challenges. “By strengthening economic partnerships with India, we are creating new opportunities for BC businesses, ensuring jobs, prosperity, and a sustainable future for British Columbians,” he said.

Chandigarh’s inclusion in the mission underscores BC’s recognition of Punjab and North India as vital partners for long-term economic cooperation, innovation exchange, and job creation. The province hopes the mission will open new avenues for trade, investment, and collaboration between BC and Indian states.
