Jabalpur (Rajeev Sharma): Rescue teams are continuing operations at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur after a tourist boat accident claimed nine lives, with authorities still searching for those unaccounted for following the incident.
Officials said the number of fatalities increased after more bodies were recovered during ongoing efforts led by the National Disaster Response Force along with local agencies. The accident occurred when the boat overturned amid strong winds and turbulent conditions in the reservoir.
State minister Rakesh Singh noted that a clearer understanding of the incident would emerge once the rescue mission concludes. He also pointed out that questions remain regarding safety preparedness, particularly reports suggesting passengers were equipped with life jackets.
Eyewitnesses described sudden weather changes, including powerful gusts, which may have destabilised the vessel. Some survivors said they had urged the operator to turn back due to worsening conditions, but the warning was allegedly ignored.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav confirmed that over a dozen people were rescued soon after the mishap and assured that relief and assistance are being extended to affected families.
There have also been conflicting claims about safety arrangements on board. While officials maintain that precautions were in place, a few survivors alleged that adequate safety gear was either insufficient or not properly distributed.
Authorities have indicated that a formal investigation will be launched to examine the cause of the accident, including the role of weather conditions and adherence to safety protocols.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over regulation and monitoring of recreational boating activities, especially during periods of unpredictable weather.
