NEW DELHI (Gurpreet Singh)— Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman, the Indian Air Force fighter pilot who shot down an enemy jet during a tense aerial duel following the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, has taken premature retirement from military service to join a private airline as a commercial pilot. His exit brings an end to a distinguished military aviation career spanning nearly 22 years.
Varthaman, who attained his senior rank in December 2021, chose voluntary retirement as part of a career transition common among veteran military aviators, where advancement to senior command roles often shifts operational focus from cockpit duties to desk-bound administrative responsibilities.
The fighter pilot became a household name across India on February 27, 2019, while stationed on operational-readiness alert at Air Force Station Srinagar. Scrambled to intercept a hostile strike package of fourth-generation F-16 and JF-17 fighter jets heading toward the Line of Control over Nowshera, Varthaman engaged the technologically superior formation in his MiG-21 Bison. During the dogfight, he pursued a retreating aircraft and brought down a US-made F-16 with an on-board missile before his own jet was struck by beyond-visual-range weaponry, forcing him to eject over Pakistan-controlled territory.
Sustaining injuries upon landing, Varthaman secured classified operational documents before being captured by the Pakistan military. During his days in captivity, video footage showed him maintaining calm composure and strictly upholding Geneva Convention conduct protocols, winning him widespread acclaim nationwide before his release on March 1, 2019. He was subsequently conferred the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry decoration, for his exceptional bravery and professional resolve in the face of adversary fire.
