Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): During his recent visit to Canada, Sant Baba Lakha Singh Ji, Chief Priest of Gurdwara Nanaksar Kaleran, Jagraon, Punjab, and President of the Vishav Dharam Sewa Shanti Mission, shared the inspiring humanitarian initiatives of his organization in an exclusive interview with National Times Media.
Speaking about the mission’s philosophy, Baba Lakha Singh Ji said that true spirituality is reflected through selfless service to humanity. Guided by the Sikh principles of Sarbat Da Bhala (the welfare of all) and Nishkam Sewa (selfless service), the organization is dedicated to serving those who are most vulnerable in society. Baba Ji said that the Nanaksar movement today has more than 1,000 centres across the world, where thousands of volunteers are engaged in humanitarian service while spreading the spiritual teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, and the universal message of peace, compassion, humility, and devotion to God. He said these centres serve as places of worship, community service, and spiritual learning, inspiring people of all backgrounds to live lives rooted in faith and selfless service.
Baba Ji explained that the mission provides educational assistance to children from economically disadvantaged families, ensuring they have opportunities to build a better future through learning. The organization also cares for elderly people who have been abandoned or neglected by their families by providing them with safe shelter, nutritious food, medical care, and a peaceful spiritual environment where they can live with dignity and respect. He further shared that widows and their children receive continuous support through the mission, including financial assistance, food, education, and other essential resources to help them rebuild their lives. One of the mission’s most significant humanitarian services is its daily community kitchen outside PGI Chandigarh, where approximately 1,500 to 2,000 family members of hospitalized patients are served free, freshly prepared meals every day. Baba Ji said that many families travel long distances for treatment and often face financial hardships, making this service an important source of relief and comfort during difficult times.
Looking ahead, Baba Lakha Singh Ji announced that the organization is also establishing a new hospital where patients will receive treatment through naturopathy and natural healing therapies. The upcoming facility aims to promote holistic healthcare by combining natural methods of treatment with compassionate patient care, making affordable healthcare accessible to those in need. During the interview, Baba Ji also reflected on the life and teachings of the revered Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, describing him as a beacon of humility, devotion, and spiritual enlightenment. He said Baba Nand Singh Ji dedicated his life to meditation, service, and devotion to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, inspiring millions to live lives based on faith, compassion, honesty, and selfless service.
Speaking about his international travels, Baba Ji said that he regularly visits countries around the world, including Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe, to spread the universal message of peace, unity, brotherhood, and spiritual awakening. Through kirtan, katha, and religious congregations, he seeks to inspire people to lead lives of honesty, humility, devotion, and selfless service. Baba Lakha Singh Ji also highlighted the growing interest among Sikh youth and the global Punjabi diaspora in reconnecting with their spiritual heritage. He encouraged younger generations to remain connected with Gurbani, Sikh values, and community service while embracing modern education, professional excellence, and responsible leadership.
Concluding the interview, Baba Ji urged people across the world to embrace compassion, kindness, and unity, emphasizing that serving humanity is the highest form of worship. He also praised the Sikh community in Canada for preserving its rich religious heritage while making valuable contributions to Canadian society through volunteerism, charitable initiatives, and community leadership.
