New Delhi (National Times): Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly following a unanimous decision by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs during a legislative meeting on Sunday.
The announcement was made by senior AAP leader Gopal Rai at a press briefing.
“In today’s legislative party meeting, it was unanimously decided that Atishi will serve as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. She has demonstrated strong leadership during challenging times as Delhi’s Chief Minister. AAP will now take on the responsibility of being a constructive opposition,” Rai stated.
Atishi expressed gratitude to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s elected MLAs for entrusting her with the role.
Speaking at the press conference, she vowed to hold the BJP government accountable, particularly regarding their promises to women’s welfare. She pointed out that the Rs 2,500 assistance scheme for women, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged to approve in the first cabinet meeting, was yet to be implemented under the new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
“The people of Delhi have chosen AAP as their opposition, and we will ensure their voices are heard in the Assembly. The BJP made several promises, based on which they won the mandate. Our duty is to ensure these promises are fulfilled,” Atishi asserted.
She further emphasized, “PM Modi personally assured that the Rs 2,500 assistance scheme for women would be passed in the first cabinet meeting. However, despite the meeting taking place, there has been no action. AAP will not allow BJP to backtrack on its commitments, and we will fight to ensure Delhi’s women receive their rightful financial aid.”
AAP faced a significant setback in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, securing only 22 seats, while the BJP claimed 48 out of 70 seats, marking the end of AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital.
