ASIRT Probes Officer-Involved Shooting at Strathcona County RCMP Detachment

Strathcona County, Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation into a police-involved shooting that occurred on the morning of July 28 at the Strathcona County RCMP detachment.

According to initial reports, the incident began around 10:30 a.m., when an RCMP officer spotted a man inside the detachment’s secure parking area. The officer reportedly believed the individual was armed and relayed the information to other members over police radio.

In response, multiple officers arrived on scene and issued verbal commands to the man. A confrontation followed, during which four officers discharged their firearms, striking the man multiple times.

Police officers administered emergency first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Authorities confirmed he remains hospitalized and is expected to survive. No injuries were reported among the officers involved.

ASIRT, which investigates cases of serious injury or death involving police, has taken over the investigation to determine whether the use of force was justified under the circumstances. As per protocol, no further details will be released while the investigation is ongoing.

ASIRT’s mandate is to conduct thorough, independent investigations into incidents involving law enforcement that result in serious injury, death, or significant allegations of police misconduct.
