Mumbai (Gurpreet Singh): Senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide has made history as the first woman to be appointed Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, taking charge of India’s wealthiest civic body on Tuesday. Bhide, a seasoned 1995-batch officer, officially succeeded Bhushan Gagrani following his retirement. During a ceremony held at the BMC’s historic headquarters in South Mumbai, she acknowledged the 150-year legacy of the institution, which remains one of the oldest and most significant local self-governing bodies in the country.
Upon assuming her new role, Bhide identified the enhancement of public transport safety for women as a top priority for her administration. Her extensive background in urban infrastructure is expected to be a major asset, as she will simultaneously retain her position as the Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation. Having previously served as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office, she is widely recognized for her instrumental role in expanding Mumbai’s metro network and managing complex city-wide projects.
With the monsoon season approaching, the new commissioner also emphasized the urgent need to expedite nullah cleaning and flood-prevention measures across the city. Ensuring that the city’s drainage infrastructure is prepared for heavy rainfall is a perennial challenge for the BMC, and Bhide committed to overseeing these operations personally to minimize disruption for residents. Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to bring technical expertise and a focus on commuter safety to the forefront of Mumbai’s civic management.
The transition comes at a pivotal time for the city as it continues to navigate large-scale transit shifts and infrastructure upgrades.
