Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): The Honourable Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine, notwithstanding recent allegations of corruption within the Ukrainian government. Speaking at a press conference, Minister Anand addressed concerns surrounding the potential misuse of military aid, a crucial component of Canada’s assistance to Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

The remarks come after reports surfaced regarding corruption involving Ukrainian officials, particularly in the procurement of military supplies and the management of foreign aid. These allegations have raised questions in some international circles about the effectiveness and transparency of the billions of dollars in military and humanitarian assistance being provided to Ukraine by Western nations, including Canada.

However, Minister Anand emphasized that these allegations will not alter Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. “We are deeply concerned about the allegations of corruption, and they must be taken seriously,” she said. “But our position on supporting Ukraine remains unchanged. Canada will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom, democracy, and sovereignty.”

Canada has been a staunch ally of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The country has provided significant military aid, including artillery, armoured vehicles, and advanced weaponry, as well as training for Ukrainian forces. In addition to military support, Canada has contributed millions in humanitarian aid and imposed sanctions on Russia. Minister Anand reiterated that these efforts are critical in the broader goal of countering Russia’s aggression and upholding international law.

While acknowledging the need for accountability, the Minister stressed that the focus must remain on the Ukrainian people, who are the victims of Russia’s unprovoked war. “Ukraine is under siege, and the Ukrainian people deserve our unwavering support,” Anand added. “We will continue to provide Ukraine with the resources it needs to defend itself against Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion.”

Anand also highlighted Canada’s role in supporting reforms within Ukraine to address corruption. “We remain engaged with the Ukrainian government to ensure that aid is being used effectively, and we continue to support efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s democratic institutions and governance,” she said.

The corruption scandal has led to some calls for greater oversight of the aid being provided to Ukraine. In response, Minister Anand assured that Canada, along with its allies, is working to ensure the transparency and proper allocation of resources. “We are closely monitoring how aid is distributed, and we will continue to hold the Ukrainian government accountable for ensuring that military and humanitarian assistance reaches those who need it most,” she said.

Despite these challenges, Minister Anand reiterated that Canada’s resolve to help Ukraine remains firm. “Canada is committed to being part of the international coalition to help Ukraine defend itself, rebuild its institutions, and ultimately secure peace and stability in the region,” she concluded.
