National Times Bureau :- The Punjab government is likely to declare Anandpur Sahib as Punjab’s 24th district to mark 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The region holds significant religious revarence and residents have long been demanding district status for it.
Currently, the Anandpur Sahib region is divided between the assembly constituencies of Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar (Ropar) districts. Local citizens, religious bodies, and public representatives have been consistently urging the government to create a separate district.
The proposal is also being considered substantial from administrative convenience and regional development perspective.
A high-level committee formed by the government has assessed the feasibility of creating new districts. The formation of a new district is estimated to cost around ₹560 crore, which includes expenses related to infrastructure, administrative buildings, and staff appointments.
It is being speculated that one or two assembly constituencies from Hoshiarpur district may be included in the new Anandpur Sahib district. Discussions are also underway to make Anandpur Sahib and Nangal the main centers of the proposed district.
Three days ago, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Maan inaugurated the “Heritage Street” project in Sri Anandpur Sahib, Rupnagar district — the first such initiative in 50 years. The project aims to promote this sacred and historic city as a global center for culture and tourism.
