Madrid [Spain], June 4, 2025: In a landmark move aimed at expanding India’s global dairy footprint, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), widely known as Amul, has launched its fresh milk in Spain through a strategic partnership with Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (COVAP), Spain’s leading first-tier dairy cooperative.
The official launch ceremony was held at the Embassy of India in Madrid and witnessed the presence of Dinesh K. Patnaik, Indian Ambassador to Spain; Fernando Heredia Noguera from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture; COVAP President Ricardo Delgado Vizcaino; and senior representatives from both Amul and its Spanish channel partners.
Amul, the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative with over 3.6 million dairy farmers, operates 112 dairy plants across India with a processing capacity of 42 million litres of milk per day. Rated the world’s strongest dairy brand, Amul generates an annual turnover exceeding $11 billion and handles over 12 billion litres of milk annually.
COVAP, based in Andalusia, Spain, is a 65-year-old cooperative that processes over 400 million litres of milk per year in one of Europe’s most advanced dairy plants. With over 2,000 active farmer-members, COVAP exports dairy products to more than 30 countries, including the US, UK, and markets across Asia.
As part of the new collaboration, Amul milk will be launched first in Madrid and Barcelona and will expand to other cities such as Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Cordoba, and Lisbon in Portugal. Amul has also announced plans to introduce its milk and dairy products in other European markets including Germany, Italy, and Switzerland in the near future.
Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, expressed enthusiasm over the partnership, stating, “This is the first time that Amul fresh milk is being launched in Europe. Our association with COVAP ensures Spanish consumers will be nourished with the goodness of Amul milk. It aligns with our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making Amul a global dairy brand.”
COVAP President Ricardo Delgado Vizcaino remarked, “This partnership not only benefits COVAP’s members but also empowers Indian dairy farmers. By combining our technological expertise and milk quality with Amul’s globally recognized brand, we create a synergy that supports cooperatives in both nations.”
The collaboration marks a significant milestone as it coincides with the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, declared by the United Nations, and reaffirms India’s commitment to strengthening cooperative-led global trade.
