Amritsar (National Times): In anticipation of the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, commemorated as Ghallukara Diwas, Amritsar has been placed under an unprecedented security cover with the deployment of nearly 7,000 police personnel across the holy city. The observance, scheduled for June 6 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, is expected to draw thousands of devotees from across the globe.
Operation Bluestar, carried out in 1984, remains one of the most emotionally charged events in Sikh history. Every year, June 6 marks a solemn day of remembrance for those who lost their lives, and the day holds deep spiritual and emotional significance for the Sikh community.
In view of the sensitivity surrounding the event, tight surveillance measures have been put in place. The Punjab Police, in coordination with district administration, has established checkpoints throughout Amritsar—particularly around Sri Harmandir Sahib, commercial markets, and major roads. Drone cameras are also being deployed for aerial surveillance to ensure real-time monitoring of public movement.
Speaking to the media, Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated, “We are adopting an information-based policing strategy. Anyone attempting to disrupt the peaceful observance will be dealt with strictly. The safety of every devotee is our utmost priority.”
The SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) has appealed for peaceful and disciplined participation. Additional security has been reinforced at Akal Takht Sahib, where the main religious program will take place.
In preparation for any emergency, medical teams, ambulances, and fire services have been placed on standby. Authorities have also issued a stern warning against hate speech or provocative content, both offline and online. Cyber surveillance teams are actively monitoring social media platforms to counter misinformation.
Both the Punjab Government and religious institutions have urged devotees to maintain calm, discipline, and unity during the sacred remembrance.
