Amritsar, May 28, 2025: A powerful explosion on Tuesday morning in the Majitha Road Bypass area of Amritsar has raised serious national security concerns after preliminary investigations suggested a possible terror link. The blast, which occurred around 9:30 AM, killed a man now identified by officials as a suspected operative of the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa.
Initially believed to be an accidental detonation, possibly while a scrap dealer was dismantling explosive material, the narrative began to shift dramatically as forensic teams and intelligence agencies examined the site.
Eyewitnesses reported a deafening noise followed by chaos, prompting immediate police and bomb disposal squad deployment. The blast was so intense that the victim’s arms were blown off. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed shortly thereafter.
By afternoon, a senior government official confirmed to ANI that the deceased was being treated as a “suspected terrorist,” pointing to his alleged links with Babbar Khalsa. Law enforcement sources say the incident may not have been accidental but rather an explosion triggered during the handling or assembly of an improvised explosive device (IED).
Security agencies have cordoned off the area and launched a high-level investigation. Intelligence inputs are being examined to ascertain whether the individual was part of a broader network planning a terror strike in the border district.
Forensic teams continue to collect evidence, including traces of explosive residue and components used in the device. Meanwhile, police are trying to trace the man’s movements and possible accomplices through CCTV footage and phone data.
The incident has heightened alert levels across Punjab, especially in sensitive areas such as Amritsar, given its proximity to the international border.
