Amritpal Singh parole rejected: Punjab and Haryana HC dismisses petition to attend Parliament Budget Session

Gurpreet Singh :- The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday dismissed a parole petition filed by Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh. He had sought temporary release on parole to attend the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. A Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjeev Berry declined to grant relief.

During the hearing, Amritpal Singh argued that he represents nearly 1.9 million voters and that his continued detention amounts to a denial of democratic representation. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court was not convinced, thereby rejecting the parole.

Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain told the court that Amritpal’s absence from Parliament had already reached 59 days. And as per rules, a seat can be declared vacant if a member remains absent for 60 consecutive days without permission. However, Satyapal Jain clarified that there is no immediate threat to Amritpal Singh’s membership. A parliamentary committee has the authority to grant leave in such cases.

Where is Amritpal Singh?

At present, Amritpal Singh is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam under preventive detention. He had also submitted representations to the Central government and the Lok Sabha Speaker, seeking permission to attend the session.
