Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail, has been permitted by a court in Amritsar to speak to his ailing grandmother through a video call.
Additional Sessions Judge Barinder Singh passed the order while considering an application submitted by Amritpal’s legal team seeking permission for him to meet his grandmother, who had recently been hospitalised.
According to Amritpal’s lawyer, Rituraj Singh, the court has allowed the jailed MP to make one video call within five days from October 7. The conversation will be limited to 10 minutes.
The legal team had initially sought interim bail so that Amritpal could travel to meet his grandmother in person. However, she was discharged from the hospital while the application was pending.
With the circumstances having changed, the court opted to allow communication through video conferencing instead.
“We had moved an application seeking interim bail for Amritpal to meet his grandmother, who was unwell and had been hospitalised,” his counsel said. He added that after her discharge, the court permitted the 10-minute video interaction.
Amritpal has been in Dibrugarh jail since 2023
Amritpal Singh has been held at Dibrugarh Central Jail since April 2023 after being detained under the National Security Act, a law that permits preventive detention in cases involving national security and public order.
His detention under the NSA came after Punjab authorities launched a major operation against him and members of his organisation.
The NSA detention period ended in April 2026. However, his release did not follow immediately.
The Punjab Police subsequently arrested him in connection with the violence at the Ajnala police station. The case relates to an incident in which a large group of his supporters had gathered at the police station in 2023.
Amritpal remains in judicial custody in that case.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has also passed orders allowing him to continue being housed at the Dibrugarh facility, with security considerations cited as a reason for keeping him away from Punjab.
For now, the court’s latest order gives the Lok Sabha member an opportunity to speak to his grandmother remotely, following concerns over her health.
