New Delhi, December 10 — A sharp confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi exchanged barbs over allegations of “vote chori,” turning the debate on electoral reforms into a charged political face-off.
Tensions rose when Rahul Gandhi interrupted Amit Shah mid-speech, prompting the Home Minister to accuse the Opposition of double standards and misinformation. Shah said Gandhi had raised questions in three separate press conferences about voter list manipulation, but insisted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process itself is designed to correct and sanitise electoral rolls.
Shah argued that the Opposition was attacking the Election Commission only when defeated, while praising it when victorious. He said the BJP faced anti-incumbency only when it failed to meet public expectations, but rejected claims that flawed electoral rolls influenced election outcomes. “Your defeat is certain; the voter list has nothing to do with it,” he said, asserting that he had answers to all accusations, including those made in Gandhi’s press briefings.
Rahul Gandhi challenged Shah directly, demanding an open debate on the allegations he has raised in his three press conferences on voter fraud. He questioned why Election Commissioners were given full immunity and reiterated claims of large-scale irregularities, including what he said were 19 lakh fake voters in Haryana.
Shah dismissed the challenge, stressing that parliamentary proceedings would not follow Gandhi’s demands and that he would present his points in his own order. “You can’t run the Parliament with obstinacy,” he said, urging the LoP to remain patient.
Calling Shah’s reply “defensive” and “frightened,” Rahul Gandhi said the Home Minister was avoiding genuine scrutiny. Gandhi has held at least three major press conferences since August 2025 alleging widespread voter manipulation by the Election Commission in coordination with the ruling BJP, focusing especially on alleged deletions and duplicate entries in Karnataka and Haryana.
