New Delhi, March 27, 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday vowed to put a complete stop to illegal infiltration in West Bengal if the BJP comes to power in the state in 2026. He accused the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government of shielding and legitimizing illegal immigrants, including Rohingyas and Bangladeshi infiltrators.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a debate on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025, Shah alleged that illegal immigrants have been issued Aadhaar and voter ID cards in Bengal’s 24 Parganas district, allowing them to spread across India. He claimed that if the Bengal government stopped providing these documents, infiltration would drastically reduce.
The Home Minister also blamed the Bengal government for obstructing border fencing efforts along the India-Bangladesh border. He said 450 km of fencing remains incomplete due to the state’s reluctance to allocate land, despite multiple requests. Shah revealed that he had personally written 10 letters to CM Mamata Banerjee and that the Home Secretary held seven meetings with Bengal officials, but the state had refused to cooperate.
India shares a 4,097-km border with Bangladesh, of which 3,232 km has been fenced. However, West Bengal, which shares the longest stretch of 2,216 km, still has 450 km unfenced, including a difficult 112-km terrain that remains open for infiltrators.
Shah reiterated that once the BJP government takes charge in Bengal, illegal immigration will be completely stopped.
