New Delhi, August 5, 2025 — Amit Shah has etched his name in Indian political history by becoming the country’s longest-serving Union Home Minister. On Tuesday, he surpassed the record previously held by BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani.
Shah first took over the Home Ministry on May 30, 2019, following the NDA’s re-election. After completing his first term on June 9, 2024, he was reappointed the very next day, on June 10. As of August 5, he has served 2,258 days in office, overtaking Advani’s 2,256-day tenure between March 19, 1998, and May 22, 2004.
The milestone was acknowledged during the National Democratic Alliance’s parliamentary party meeting in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Shah’s consistent leadership and unwavering service to the nation.
Amit Shah’s prolonged tenure reflects his deep-rooted influence within the BJP and the confidence reposed in him by the government. His time in office has been marked by key policy decisions and an aggressive national security stance, which have shaped India’s internal affairs over the past six years.
