Allegations of Police Misconduct Surface in Jalalabad; Cop Suspended Over Assault and Extortion Claims

Gurpreet Singh :- Jalalabad has come under scrutiny after serious allegations of police misconduct emerged, with a local youth accusing personnel of assault and forced extortion. The incident, reportedly dated April 5, has triggered concern after details surfaced publicly.

According to the complainant, Jabar Singh, a resident of Ghallu village in Abohar, he was returning home with friends after purchasing a vehicle when they stopped at a roadside eatery. It was there that a police vehicle carrying three personnel—two Home Guards and one Punjab Police constable—allegedly detained them without justification.

The victim claims that the officials falsely accused them of involvement in illegal arms activities and subjected them to physical assault without hearing their side. He further alleged that the accused forcibly extorted around ₹30,000 via digital payment and confiscated personal documents, including Aadhaar and PAN cards, to pressure them for additional money.

Singh stated that he was later compelled to arrange the remaining amount by mortgaging household jewellery. He also accused the personnel of humiliating treatment, claiming he was forced to alter his appearance under coercion. The matter gained traction after the allegations went viral on social media.

Acting swiftly, Fazilka district police suspended one accused constable, Jaspreet Singh, while a report against the two Home Guard personnel has been forwarded to the concerned department for further action.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gursewak Singh Brar confirmed that an investigation is underway and assured that strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty. The incident has raised serious questions about accountability and conduct within the law enforcement system.
