Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s Minister of Education, Demetrios Nicolaides, has announced updates to ministerial orders regarding exemptions to in-person learning options, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining high educational standards despite ongoing strikes.
Nicolaides reaffirmed that Alberta Education places trust in school boards to determine the best educational programming for their students. He noted that school divisions are expected to have plans in place to ensure continuity of learning during labour disruptions.
To protect the safety and well-being of students and staff during recent strikes, the Edmonton Public School Division, Fort McMurray Roman Catholic Board of Education, Fort McMurray School District, and Sturgeon School Division applied for and were granted ministerial exemptions allowing alternative learning options for students who rely on educational assistants.
A recent court ruling, however, underscored the necessity of broadening the scope of exemption orders to ensure that resources are allocated equitably to all students, not only those requiring additional support. In response, Alberta’s government is implementing immediate changes to the ministerial orders.
These updated exemptions will require school authorities to:
- Evaluate and distribute resources in an inclusive and equitable manner.
- Make reasonable efforts to provide in-person learning options to all students.
- Enable students to continue their education programs and courses if transitioning to at-home learning.
- Maintain regular communication with parents and students throughout the process.
Nicolaides emphasized that school boards must ensure clear and consistent communication with families and swiftly share plans for learning continuity. He reiterated Alberta’s commitment to providing a world-class education that supports students’ academic, emotional, and physical well-being.
The government will continue to work closely with school partners to uphold in-person learning opportunities, reinforcing its dedication to student success and well-being despite ongoing labour challenges.
