Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta Legislature’s Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund will hold a public meeting on October 26, inviting residents to discuss the fund’s investment performance and long-term role as it marks its 50th anniversary.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will provide Albertans with an opportunity to hear from financial experts, ask questions and share their views on the province’s long-term savings fund.

Tany Yao, MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo and chair of the committee, encouraged residents to participate in the anniversary-year discussion, whether by attending in person or joining remotely.

The meeting will take place on the second floor of the Queen Elizabeth II Building at 9820–107 Street in Edmonton. Those unable to attend can watch the proceedings live through Alberta Assembly TV, the Legislative Assembly’s website and its social media channels.

Public to Question Officials on Fund Performance

The session will begin with an update on the fund’s performance from representatives of Alberta Treasury Board and Finance and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo).

A question-and-answer session will follow, allowing participants to raise concerns and seek clarification directly from officials and committee members.

Questions can be submitted during the meeting through the Legislative Assembly’s Facebook and X accounts using the hashtag #abheritagefund. Participants can also email Committee.Admin@assembly.ab.ca or call 1-800-717-1738 and enter code 34098. The telephone line will be available only while the meeting is underway.

Residents are also encouraged to send their questions and comments ahead of the event through the committee’s official webpage. The committee plans to address these submissions during the live session.

Fund Marks Five Decades of Savings

Established in 1976 under the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund Act during Premier Peter Lougheed’s tenure, the Heritage Fund was created to preserve a portion of the province’s revenue from non-renewable resources for the long term.

It serves as Alberta’s principal long-term savings account, with its investment activities and performance subject to legislative oversight.

The standing committee reviews the fund’s quarterly reports, approves its annual report and reports to the Legislative Assembly on whether the fund is fulfilling its mandate. It is also required to hold a public meeting each year to discuss the fund’s investment activities and performance with Albertans.

The October 26 meeting will offer residents an opportunity to engage with the committee and officials as the fund reaches the 50-year milestone.

Further information about the meeting, committee activities and advance submissions is available at the Legislative Assembly of Alberta’s committee webpage. The fund’s quarterly and annual reports can be accessed through the Alberta government’s Heritage Savings Trust Fund website.
