Alberta-UAE Ties Set to Strengthen with New Calgary–Abu Dhabi Direct Flight

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta expects closer economic and business ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following the launch of Etihad Airways’ direct flight service between Calgary and Abu Dhabi, according to Alberta Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Minister Joseph Schow.

Schow said the new air connection would make travel between the two regions more convenient while creating opportunities for investment, trade and commercial partnerships. He noted that Alberta and the UAE are both major energy producers, giving them scope to explore areas of mutual economic interest.

The direct service is also expected to improve access for business representatives, investors and tourists, helping more people discover Alberta’s economic potential and travel destinations.

“ This direct route creates a valuable link between Alberta and the UAE, making it easier for businesses, investors and travellers to connect,” Schow said in his statement welcoming the new service.

The minister added that the flight connects Calgary to Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways’ wider international network, potentially making Alberta more accessible to visitors and businesses from other parts of the world.

### Alberta expands engagement in the Middle East

Schow said the provincial government has spent several years working to deepen its relationships with the UAE and other countries across the Middle East.

Alberta’s office in Abu Dhabi, along with ongoing trade missions to the region, forms part of those efforts to develop stronger commercial links and encourage investment.

The new flight is expected to complement these initiatives by improving direct access between the two markets and facilitating closer contact between businesses and travellers.

Schow welcomed Etihad Airways’ decision to introduce the route, saying Alberta is looking to expand its international connections and compete in global markets.

He said the service reflects international interest in Alberta’s economy and could help create further opportunities for trade, investment and tourism.
