Alberta Renews Commitment to Youth in Care with Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Scholarship

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s Minister of Children and Family Services, Searle Turton, reaffirmed the province’s dedication to empowering young adults formerly in government care by officially launching this year’s round of applications for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Scholarship.

Originally established to honor the 2011 royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Alberta, the scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance by participants of the province’s Advancing Futures program—an initiative that supports youth as they transition from government care into adulthood.

“We are investing in the future of Alberta’s youth,” Minister Turton stated. “This scholarship is about recognizing resilience, perseverance, and excellence in education among those who have overcome significant life challenges.”

Applications for the $2,000 scholarship are now open until August 31. A total of 25 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing post-secondary studies in areas ranging from the arts and sciences to social work and hospitality. Eligible programs also include diploma courses in paramedicine, esthetics, correctional services, and more.

The scholarship is part of the broader Advancing Futures Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Canada, through which the Alberta government invests $14.2 million annually. The program offers not only financial support but also emotional and social resources to help youth succeed in higher education and transition to independent adulthood.

Since its inception in 2004, the program has helped over 1,500 young Albertans earn diplomas, trades certifications, degrees, or certificates. Participants have also reported improved job prospects, better financial literacy, stronger life skills, and enhanced overall well-being.

Minister Turton emphasized that Alberta remains steadfast in its mission: “We are committed to equipping these young adults with the education, skills, and support they need to build fulfilling lives and become successful, contributing members of our society.”
