Alberta reaches labour deal with health care support workers, says Minister Horner

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s government has announced the successful conclusion of collective bargaining with thousands of health care support staff, marking the end of negotiations across the province’s major health sectors for the current round.

Treasury Board President and Finance Minister Nate Horner confirmed that the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) has finalized a new collective agreement covering general support services (GSS) employees working with Alberta Health Services (AHS), provincial health agencies (PHAs) and provincial health corporations (PHCs).

The agreement affects nearly 31,000 workers employed in a wide range of roles across hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities throughout Alberta. Horner acknowledged the extensive efforts made by both AHS and AUPE to reach the deal, calling it an important step toward maintaining stability within the health system.

The minister expressed appreciation for the contribution of GSS workers, crediting them for their continued commitment and service in supporting patient care across the province.

According to the government, the new agreement includes wage increases that align with settlements reached elsewhere in the public sector, along with enhancements to employee benefits. Horner said these measures reflect a balanced approach to compensation while recognizing the essential role played by support staff.

With this settlement, Alberta has now completed collective bargaining with its largest health care bargaining units for this cycle. The government described the agreements as a significant investment in the province’s health care infrastructure, aimed at ensuring continuity of services and long-term workforce stability for Albertans.
