Edmonton/Victoria, June 8, 2025: Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has confirmed her intent to directly approach British Columbia Premier David Eby to gain support for a new pipeline project connecting Alberta’s energy resources to the West Coast. The proposed pipeline would lead to the Port of Prince Rupert, providing Alberta with an alternative export route and reducing its reliance on American markets.
Smith emphasized the urgency of this infrastructure as Alberta faces increasing trade uncertainty, particularly following U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on Canadian steel, aluminum, and EV components. The Premier argued that Alberta must diversify its export routes to protect its energy sector from geopolitical and trade-related disruptions.
However, Premier Eby has so far not supported the project, citing environmental risks and consistent public opposition in B.C. to new fossil fuel infrastructure. In his previous public statements, Eby has reiterated that British Columbia prioritizes climate goals and ecosystem protection, and he remains unconvinced that another pipeline fits within that vision.
Despite this resistance, Smith remains committed to opening dialogue. She plans to meet Premier Eby at upcoming interprovincial meetings and will attempt to present the pipeline as an opportunity for both provinces. Smith claims the project would not only boost Alberta’s economy but also offer B.C. increased infrastructure investment, jobs, and future control over export logistics through its ports.
This political development comes amid broader federal-provincial tensions regarding energy, environment, and economic policy. Ottawa has not yet commented on the latest push, but industry leaders have expressed interest in the proposal, viewing it as critical to Canada’s long-term energy security.
As Alberta pushes forward, Premier Smith’s ability to convince Eby will be a decisive factor in whether the project gains traction or remains stalled by interprovincial disagreement.
