Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is looking to expand its economic footprint in the Middle East, with Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Minister Joseph Schow scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 26 to November 5 to pursue new trade and investment opportunities.
The visit will include meetings with government officials and industry representatives in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, alongside participation in the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2026. A delegation of Alberta-based companies will accompany Schow to the major international energy industry event.
The mission is intended to strengthen commercial relationships, promote Alberta’s energy expertise and help provincial businesses explore opportunities in overseas markets.
Schow said the UAE represents an important market for Alberta companies seeking to expand internationally. He added that stronger economic partnerships could support investment, business growth and employment in the province.
Energy sector at the centre of trade mission
Alberta’s participation in ADIPEC will provide an opportunity for provincial businesses to connect with international industry leaders and showcase their capabilities in energy production, technology and innovation.
The government said the visit reflects its broader strategy of diversifying export markets, attracting international investment and building long-term trading relationships. It also aims to highlight Alberta’s contribution to global energy security and the role of private-sector partnerships in expanding economic ties.
During the trip, Schow is scheduled to hold discussions with government and industry representatives in both cities before attending ADIPEC events in Abu Dhabi from November 2 to 4.
His itinerary also includes an Alberta welcome dinner ahead of the conference and a networking reception hosted by the Canadian Business Council.
Direct Calgary-Abu Dhabi flights to support connections
The trade mission coincides with the introduction of direct flights between Calgary and Abu Dhabi by Etihad Airways, providing Alberta-based travellers and businesses with a new connection to the UAE.
According to the provincial government, the service follows efforts to strengthen economic links between Alberta and the Gulf country. The direct route is expected to provide another channel for business engagement and international travel between the two markets.
Meetings scheduled across Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Schow’s itinerary includes government and industry meetings in Abu Dhabi on October 27, followed by engagements in Dubai on October 28 and 29. He is scheduled to return to Abu Dhabi on October 30 for further meetings before attending the energy conference the following week.
The minister is due to depart the UAE on November 5 and return to Alberta. The schedule remains subject to change.
The Alberta government said its trade missions are designed to help local companies reach new customers, attract investment and strengthen international commercial partnerships.
Expenses associated with the visit will be published on the province’s official travel and expense disclosure webpage.
