Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams, has launched a province-wide summer tour aimed at strengthening collaboration with municipalities, discussing local priorities and reviewing infrastructure projects supported through provincial funding.
Over the next two weeks, the minister is expected to visit more than 90 municipalities, meeting elected representatives to better understand the issues facing communities while highlighting development initiatives that are contributing to regional growth.
Williams said the tour is designed to create direct dialogue with municipal leaders and gain first-hand insight into both the successes and the challenges experienced by local governments. He added that the provincial government remains committed to working closely with municipalities to ensure communities remain safe, resilient and prepared for future growth.
A major focus of the tour will be projects funded through Alberta’s Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF). Over the past two years, communities included in the minister’s itinerary have collectively received nearly $200 million through the program to support local infrastructure and essential public services.
The funding has been directed toward a wide range of municipal priorities, including emergency response equipment, road and transportation upgrades, community centres, recreational facilities, public works machinery and initiatives that improve neighbourhood safety.
Officials say the LGFF provides municipalities with predictable and flexible financial support, allowing local governments to invest in projects that reflect the specific needs of their communities rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
During his visits, Williams is also expected to hold discussions on regional development, infrastructure requirements, long-term planning and ways to further strengthen cooperation between provincial and municipal governments.
The government believes regular engagement with municipalities is essential to ensuring local administrations have the resources and flexibility needed to deliver reliable public services while supporting sustainable economic and community development across Alberta.
