Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is marking Provincial Hunting Day by highlighting the role of hunters in wildlife management, conservation and the responsible use of the province’s natural landscapes.
In a statement issued Sept. 24, Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen said the annual observance provides an opportunity to recognize Albertans involved in hunting while emphasizing the importance of protecting wildlife and maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Loewen pointed to Alberta’s diverse wildlife populations and said long-term conservation depends on continued efforts backed by science, responsible management and participation from communities across the province.
According to the minister, hunters contribute to that work through ethical harvesting and participation in wildlife-management activities. He described them as an important part of efforts to maintain sustainable wildlife populations for future generations.
Conservation licence plate highlighted
This year’s Provincial Hunting Day also comes as Alberta promotes its new conservation licence plate, which gives residents another way to contribute to conservation initiatives.
Loewen said revenue and support generated through the initiative can help fund projects aimed at protecting wildlife and the habitats they depend on. He encouraged Albertans to consider supporting conservation through the licence plate, volunteering or participating in local initiatives.
The minister said conservation is a shared responsibility and that even activities outside hunting can contribute to protecting Alberta’s natural environment.
Encouraging youth involvement
The statement also placed emphasis on introducing younger Albertans to hunting and outdoor activities.
Loewen said Provincial Hunting Day offers an opportunity for experienced hunters to pass along knowledge about safe and responsible hunting, outdoor skills and wildlife conservation to the next generation.
He encouraged families and experienced hunters to involve young people in outdoor activities and help them better understand the relationship between wildlife management and the protection of natural resources.
A focus on Alberta’s outdoors
Provincial Hunting Day is also being presented as an opportunity for Albertans to spend time outdoors, whether in forests, mountains, wetlands or other natural areas.
Loewen encouraged residents to celebrate hunting traditions while recognizing the responsibility that comes with caring for Alberta’s wildlife and natural landscapes.
The minister concluded his statement by urging hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety and wishing Albertans a safe and enjoyable Provincial Hunting Day.
