Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): As the 2025-26 school year approaches, Alberta’s government has announced a $50-million investment to add 62 pre-made classrooms this fall, easing enrolment pressures in the province’s fastest-growing communities.
This funding builds on previous Budget 2025 commitments, bringing the total investment to $100 million for 109 modular classrooms. These classrooms will create space for 2,725 students and relocate 575 more.
“Alberta’s government is moving quickly to build new schools and create more classroom spaces, so our students continue to have room to grow and thrive,” said Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education and Childcare. “This additional funding for modular classrooms will help us get much-needed spaces to some of our busiest schools, while we work as quickly as possible to open the doors to more than 130 school projects underway in the province.”
Rocky View Schools board chair Fiona Gilbert welcomed the move, noting that the additional modular classrooms will “ease current enrolment pressures” as the division awaits the completion of seven new schools approved in the 2024 and 2025 budgets.
In addition to modular classrooms, Alberta is investing $1 million to plan for four new charter school projects, including New Horizons Charter Academy, New Humble Community School, Suzuki Charter School, and Thrive Charter School. Once complete, these schools will provide more than 2,400 new or upgraded student spaces.
The government is also providing $610,000 in pre-planning funding for 13 potential future school projects, helping school boards prepare for long-term enrolment growth through project scoping and community consultations.
These initiatives are part of Alberta’s $8.6-billion Schools Now program, which aims to build and modernize more than 100 schools across the province, creating over 200,000 new student spaces over the next seven years.
