Alberta Invests $1.3M to Protect and Sustain Rangelands for Future Generations

Edmonton: The Government of Alberta has announced a $1.3 million investment under the Rangeland Sustainability Program (RSP) to safeguard the province’s rangelands, ensuring their health, biodiversity, and long-term resilience.

The funding will support academic institutions, Indigenous organizations, non-profits, and grazing associations in developing innovative solutions for sustainable rangeland management. Projects include adaptive grazing practices, grassland bird and bee biodiversity conservation, education initiatives, and community outreach.

“Our rangelands are an important natural asset, providing food for livestock, supporting rural communities and helping conserve Alberta’s biodiversity. Managing them responsibly benefits all Albertans and expands recreational access,”
said Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks.

Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson emphasized the importance of the investment for farmers and ranchers: “Healthy rangelands are the foundation of a strong agricultural sector. This program not only supports livestock production but also promotes environmental stewardship through collaboration with Indigenous groups, researchers, and local communities.”

How the Program Works

The RSP is funded through rental fees collected from grazing disposition holders on Crown land, reinvesting those resources into projects that enhance rangeland management and ecological health.

Jane Lancaster of the Southwest Alberta Sustainable Community Initiative praised the initiative, stating that the grant will help advance native grassland conservation and improve reclamation practices. Similarly, Liisa Jeffrey, Executive Director of the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association, highlighted how the funding will support innovative silvopastoral systems that improve soil fertility, wildlife habitat, and greenhouse gas mitigation.

2024–25 Funding Recipients:

  • Alberta Native Bee Council
  • Blood Tribe Land Management
  • Peace Country Beef and Forage Association
  • Southwest Alberta Sustainable Community Initiative
  • University of Alberta — Dr. Edward Bork
  • University of Alberta — Dr. James Cahill
  • Western Stock Growers Association

Applications for 2025–26 RSP funding are now open and will be accepted until Sept. 17.

With this investment, Alberta aims to ensure that its rangelands continue to provide food production, clean air, fresh water, wildlife habitat, and economic opportunities for generations to come.
