Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is taking a significant step to strengthen its workforce with the launch of the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant, a three-year, $39-million initiative in partnership with the federal government. The program is designed to help employers and employees access training that enhances productivity, innovation, and competitiveness across the province.

Alberta’s economy, recognized for its high productivity, continues to evolve with new technologies and changing market demands. To stay ahead, the province aims to ensure its workforce is equipped with the skills needed for today’s rapidly shifting job landscape.

One of the main barriers for employers looking to invest in staff development is the cost of training. The Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant addresses this by sharing expenses between government and employers. Existing employees can receive training with 50% of costs covered by the government, up to $5,000 per trainee annually. For unemployed Albertans who are hired and trained, the program can cover up to 75% of training costs, up to $10,000 per person per year.

Training programs funded under the grant focus on three main areas: business process and operations management, technical skills, and digital or technological expertise. This includes practical hands-on learning such as equipment operation, workflow optimization, business operations management, and the use of digital tools including software, cybersecurity systems, and data analytics.

“Alberta is already one of the country’s most productive economies, but staying competitive requires continuous investment in skills and innovation,” said Joseph Schow, Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration. “This grant supports both employers and employees, helping businesses adopt new technologies while giving Albertans the training they need to succeed in a fast-changing economy.”

Federal support also emphasizes workforce readiness. Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, noted, “Through this partnership, we’re helping Canadians acquire the skills necessary to thrive, assisting businesses to grow, and strengthening communities across Alberta. This is an investment in the people shaping our future.”

Local businesses are already welcoming the initiative. Doug Penner, COO of Workhub Software Corp., highlighted the importance of keeping pace with technological advancements, saying the program will help Alberta workers remain productive and adaptable for years to come.

The grant aligns with the Alberta Jobs Strategy, which aims to enhance workforce development through research, data access, and training programs. Funding for the initiative comes from Employment Insurance contributions, facilitated through the Canada-Alberta Workforce Development Agreement. Applications for the program are currently open to employers across the province.
