Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s 2026 harvest is nearing completion, with 88 per cent of major crops harvested across the province and overall yields estimated to be above average, according to Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Tara Sawyer.
In a statement issued on October 22, Sawyer acknowledged the efforts of farmers and agricultural producers who have continued harvesting despite challenging weather conditions throughout the growing season.
She said crop yields were expected to be particularly strong in southern and central Alberta, while recognizing the determination of producers working to bring in the remaining crops before winter.
Harvest operations gained momentum in recent weeks as weather conditions improved across several parts of the province. However, delayed crop maturity, rainfall earlier in the season, and more recent frost and snowfall have slowed progress in some areas.
Sawyer said farmers were making the most of favourable weather windows to complete fieldwork and secure this year’s production.
Looking ahead to the 2027 growing season, the minister pointed to encouraging conditions across much of Alberta. Soil moisture levels remain above historical averages, pasture conditions are holding up well, and fall-seeded crops have made a promising start.
The minister also recognized the contribution of farm families and agricultural producers to Alberta’s food supply, local communities and broader economy.
As harvest activities continue in areas where crops remain in the fields, producers are preparing for winter while assessing conditions for the next planting season.
The provincial update indicates that, despite weather-related setbacks, Alberta’s agricultural sector is heading towards the end of the 2026 harvest with above-average yield estimates and several positive indicators for the coming growing season.
