Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Albertans are invited to step into nature and celebrate the beauty of the province’s outdoor spaces on Saturday, July 19, as Parks Day is observed across Alberta.
Recognized annually since 1990, Parks Day aims to spotlight the immense value of parks and natural areas throughout Canada. This year’s celebration holds added significance as it marks 95 years since the establishment of Alberta’s provincial parks system.
“I want to wish all Albertans a happy Parks Day!” said Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks, in a statement. “Parks Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the incredible outdoor spaces that define our province – from the badlands to rugged backcountry trails, to the peaceful lakeside campgrounds. Parks are for people, and whether you are headed out to camp, fish, or hike this weekend, Alberta Parks offers something for everyone to celebrate, recreate, and enjoy nature.”
To mark the occasion, several provincial parks across Alberta will be hosting special activities for visitors, including guided hikes, educational programs, and family-friendly events.
In addition to on-the-ground celebrations, the Alberta government is inviting the public to participate in shaping the future of the province’s natural spaces. An online survey is currently open as part of a public consultation on Alberta’s draft Plan for Parks, which outlines a strategic approach to recreation and conservation within areas governed by the Provincial Parks Act.
The survey is available on the province’s official website and will remain open to feedback until July 26.
