Akhilesh Yadav Calls for Abolition of ED; Congress Alleges BJP Using Agencies to Distract from Failures

Bhubaneswar, April 16, 2025: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday stirred the political pot by demanding the abolition of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), stating that existing departments like the Income Tax and GST are sufficient to probe economic offences. Speaking at a press conference, Yadav criticized the ED as a redundant tool now misused for political vendetta.

“In my view, the ED should be scrapped. Congress should also push for this. If you already have Income Tax and GST departments, then why do you need the ED? It only shows you don’t trust your own institutions,” he said. He also pointed out the irony of the Congress, which had introduced the ED law, now facing its brunt. “We warned them. And now, anyone speaking against the BJP—especially in Maharashtra—faces the ED, CBI, or tax probes.”

Yadav’s comments come amid a growing political row after the ED filed a prosecution complaint (chargesheet) in the National Herald case against Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, as well as party veterans Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey. The case is scheduled for hearing on April 25 in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also weighed in, accusing the BJP-led government of weaponizing investigative agencies to distract from economic mismanagement. “Your despotic Sarkar is hell-bent on targeting the Congress to whitewash its own sins,” Kharge posted on X. “BJP’s economic mismanagement is spiralling out of control. No vision, no solution, only diversion!”

As political tempers rise, the ED’s chargesheet continues to dominate the headlines, turning the spotlight not just on legal proceedings but also on the role of institutions in India’s democratic framework.
