After Overseas Arrest, Calgary Doctor Seeks Bail in Child Abduction Case

Calgary ( Rajeev Sharna): A Calgary doctor accused of abducting his young son and taking him overseas will seek bail later this week, his lawyer confirmed in court .

Defence counsel Himmat Shergill, appearing via video link, told Justice Heather Lamoureux that a bail hearing for Muhammad Zia-Ur Rahman, 62, has been scheduled for Friday afternoon, during which the accused will seek release pending trial.

Rahman is charged with parental child abduction after Calgary police allege he took his seven-year-old son out of Canada without the consent of the child’s mother. Authorities say Rahman and the child were located in Mauritius in December after being spotted at Sir Seewoosagur Ramagoolam International Airport, triggering his arrest by local officials.

The case involved international cooperation between Mauritian authorities, Calgary Police, and federal agencies. The child was safely recovered and later reunited with his mother before returning to Canada.

Rahman has since been extradited and remains in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre. The matter continues before the Alberta Court of Justice, with further proceedings expected following the outcome of Friday’s bail hearing.
