ABVP Secures Majority in DUSU Elections, Claims President’s Post; NSUI Wins Vice President Seat

New Delhi, September 19 — The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) scored a decisive victory in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections on Friday, winning three out of four top positions, including the powerful president’s chair.

Aryan Maan, ABVP’s candidate from Haryana’s Bahadurgarh, defeated Congress-backed NSUI’s Joslyin Nandita Choudhary by a huge margin to become the new DUSU president. With this, he succeeds outgoing president and NSUI leader Ronak Khatri.

The counting process, held under heavy security, began Friday morning and continued through the day. Final figures showed Maan securing 21,854 votes, far ahead of Choudhary’s 9,973.

While ABVP’s Kunal Chaudhary and Deepika Jha claimed the posts of secretary and joint secretary with 18,506 and 16,501 votes respectively, the vice president’s seat went to NSUI’s Rahul Jhansla, who polled 22,770 votes to defeat ABVP’s Govind Tanwar.

During his campaign, Maan had promised subsidised metro passes, free Wi-Fi across campus, enhanced sports facilities, and accessibility audits for differently abled students. Choudhary, a postgraduate student of Buddhist Studies, had highlighted hostel shortages, campus security, and menstrual leave as her core agenda.

The SFI-AISA alliance, represented by Anjali from Indraprastha College for Women, raised issues of gender sensitisation, fee hikes, and grievance redressal mechanisms, but the bloc failed to make a mark in the results.

The 2025 outcome marks a comeback for ABVP after NSUI had broken its losing streak last year by winning the president and joint secretary posts. Over the past ten years, ABVP has now claimed the DUSU presidency six times, while NSUI has managed the seat twice.

DUSU elections, first held in 1954, remain one of India’s most high-profile student political contests, often reflecting wider national political trends. Several prominent leaders, including late Arun Jaitley, Ajay Maken, Alka Lamba, and Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, began their political journeys through the Delhi University student body.
