Abbotsford Home Targeted by Gunfire in Early-Morning Incident Linked to Ongoing Extortion Case

Surrey (Rajeev Sharma): The Abbotsford Police Department is investigating an early-morning shooting that has been confirmed as part of an ongoing extortion case affecting several families in the region.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 2500-block of Janzen Street at approximately 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two unoccupied vehicles in a driveway with multiple bullet holes. According to Sgt. Paul Walker, all residents inside the home were asleep at the time and fortunately unharmed.

Sgt. Paul Walker, a spokesperson for the Abbotsford police, stated in a news release that the occupants inside the home who were asleep at the time were unharmed. “The Abbotsford Police Department can confirm that this is a targeted incident related to an ongoing extortion investigation,” Walker stated in a news release.

Investigators are now appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who was in the Janzen Street area between 3:15 a.m. and 4 a.m. or who may have dash-cam footage is urged to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225. This incident follows a similar trend of extortion-related shootings in the Lower Mainland. Just last week, a Surrey business owner’s home was targeted by gunfire for the second time.

Surrey officials have expressed growing concern, with Mayor Brenda Locke calling on provincial and federal governments to increase police personnel by 150 officers to combat the escalating violence. According to the Surrey Police Service, the city has recorded 80 extortion victims, 101 extortion files, and 44 related shootings so far this year.

Authorities continue to investigate as fear and frustration rise within the community.
