Tarn Taran (Gurpreet Singh): Harmeet Singh Sandhu of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is inching closer to victory in the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll, as the vote count moves into its later stages. Sandhu, who has steadily expanded his lead with each round, is now firmly in control of the race, while his primary rival, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa of the Shiromani Akali Dal, who initially led in early rounds, has slipped into second place.
The race remains competitive, with several other prominent candidates in the fray, including Mandeep Singh, the Independent backed by Waris Punjab De, Karanbir Singh Burj from the Congress, and Harjit Singh Sandhu representing the BJP. A total of 15 candidates contested for the seat left vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
As the counting began at 8 a.m. today, the process is expected to wrap up in 16 rounds at the designated counting centre at the International College of Nursing, Piddi.
The bypoll saw a 60.95% voter turnout on Tuesday, with many eyes now on the final results. AAP workers have begun celebrating as Sandhu’s lead continues to build, signaling a potential victory for the party.
With the shift in leadership and a growing trend in Sandhu’s favour, AAP’s prospects in this bypoll could have broader implications for the party’s political trajectory in Punjab, especially following the sudden demise of Kashmir Singh Sohal.
