Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Indian hockey midfielder Manpreet Singh will be absent from the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy after a calf muscle injury ruled him out of the competition, ending his hopes of making a record eighth appearance in the tournament.
The setback is particularly disappointing for the veteran player, who was looking forward to competing in Punjab, the state where his hockey journey began. His absence will also dash hopes of seeing him achieve a historic milestone in the ninth edition of the continental tournament.
A Record Appearance Slips Away
Manpreet, India’s most-capped hockey player, had been on course to become the first player in Asia to participate in eight editions of the Asian Champions Trophy. He has been associated with the competition since its inaugural edition in China in 2011.
The upcoming tournament would have marked another significant chapter in his long international career. However, the injury has forced him to miss the event, leaving the record within reach for another occasion.
‘A Huge Disappointment,’ Says Manpreet
Speaking to The Tribune, Manpreet said missing the tournament was especially difficult because of the opportunity to play before supporters in his home state.
“It is a huge disappointment. It was a big opportunity to play on my home ground, but now I won’t be playing,” he said.
Reflecting on his connection with Punjab, the midfielder added that the region was where he first took up hockey and that he had been eagerly anticipating the chance to compete there. He also expressed uncertainty about when another such opportunity might arise.
Appeal for More International Hockey in Punjab
Manpreet also called on the Punjab government to bring more international hockey tournaments to the state, saying that hosting such events would give players like him another chance to compete in front of local fans.
He urged the authorities to resume organising international competitions in Punjab so that players could experience the support of crowds in their home region.
For Manpreet, the injury means missing more than just another tournament. It has taken away an opportunity to reach a personal milestone while playing in a place that holds special importance in his sporting career.
